Wooden Long Span Structure
This project focused on combining two different companies for increased efficiency and collaboration. The collabration was between R.L. Winston Rod Co., producer of fly rods in Montana and Mystery Ranch, producer of backcountry packs, also in Montana. I started by researching the history of manufacturing which is defined as the making of wares by manual labor or machinery. Manufacturing is the creation of tools made for humans, by humans to do/accomplish specific tasks. Tools make humans more efficient, which leads to human empowerment.
I then began researching what makes us human. The most important aspect of being human is our capacity to imagine. This laid the groundwork for the project: create a space that fosters imagination and productivity through interactions with people, light, landscape, task and the mind. To help foster creativity and productivity, natural light is very important. Due to the snowy winter climate of Bozeman, Montana, skylights on roofs become difficult. To incorporate natural light, my roof form is a series of wooden hyperbolic parabolas which allow for the walls to have large windows and a roof that drains water away from skylights
